Dydd Gŵyl Dewi Hapus // Happy St David’s Day

Today is the start of meteorological spring and also St David’s Day. Having been born and raised in England I always found it difficult to identify as being ‘English’; there seems to be so many negative connotations associated with that label. But since living in Wales, I definitely feel proud to be Welsh! There is such a sense of belonging and I’m so happy to live here and call it my home.

I’m off to visit We Are Woven for their open day today and then I’m planning to celebrate with my family at the weekend by making a big vat of Welsh Cawl (a hearty soup made with seasonal vegetables and lots of leeks!). I might even wear a leek on my lapel, (when in Wales and all that!)

Fun fact: one of my dogs is actually named St David: Dewi (although he’s less of a saint and more of a rascal! See photo below).

The phrase that Dewi Sant is most remembered for is:

gwnewch y pethau bychain // do the little things

This saying is something that really resonates with me. It reminds me that no matter how small, my decisions and contributions matter. Sometimes I feel this enormous pressure to make a massive difference in the world because that’s what I demand of myself, but actually just breaking that down into small actions can make that feel so much more manageable.

I’m so grateful for the support of the wyld clwb community; please know that attending an event or even just subscribing to this newsletter you are making a difference to our local food system, to the lives of growers and to the planet. You are doing those little things that really add up when we all do them together. So thank you, diolch.

in season

local |  kale // leeks // cauliflower // cabbages // parsnips // spring greens

wyld | alexander buds // cleavers // dandelion // nettles // wild garlic // three cornered leek // pennywort

full moon | 07.03 | worm moon or sap moon

new moon | 21.03

spring equinox 21.03

The name of the moon relates to the worm trails that start to emerge, or the tapping of the sap from trees like birch. It’s very exciting that the new moon and equinox are on the same day, a great moment for beginnings.

The days are feeling so much longer, I’m so grateful that it is still light at 6pm. These longer days have brought the foraging season with them, yay! I was really worried that there wouldn’t be enough to elevate my (very!) early spring supper on 11th March; however my recent walks have proved fruitful! I’m excited to share some of the plants listed above on the night. (There is just one space left if you wanna come!).

I thought that I would share a simple recipe that really celebrates spring and makes it easy to integrate foraging into your daily life. The recipe uses cleavers and here is a great website that will help you to identify them (and anything else for that matter!). If you fancy learning more about foraging then I’m running some events with We Are Woven, find out more details here

Here’s a link to: infused cleaver water. I really hope that you enjoy it. If you do make it please us @wyldclwb

Wishing you all a very Dydd Gŵyl Dewi Hapus. May spring be full of happiness and adventures. Hope to see you soon, but until then keeping doing the little things.

much love,

jasmin xx
